The Montessori Schools Association (MSA) was founded to support and represent all Montessori schools across the United Kingdom. The MSA works through 9 national regions each with its own Regional Chairman, and also with the Primary Group and the Childminders’ Network.
The Montessori Schools Association currently has over 3,900 members and 687 Montessori schools ranging in size from 15 to 400+ pupils covering the birth to 11 age range.
It is supported and run by the Montessori St Nicholas Charity (founded in 1954). The charity today works to support Montessori across the UK in every way it can, particularly through making awards and finance initiatives that support the development of Montessori education in the fields of training grants for individuals, equipment and advice; funding research and development into the value and effectiveness of Montessori education and facilitating the unification of the Montessori movement across the UK.
In September 2008 the Montessori St Nicholas Charity set up the Montessori Evaluation and Accreditation Board (MEAB), a national evaluation and accreditation scheme to raise standards within the Montessori Schools Association and put “best practice” at the heart of what it does. The MEAB scheme builds on Montessori’s excellent track record in education. There are now 174 MEAB accredited schools.
